Southern Baptist Seminaries & Christian Universities
Where to be trained for ministry in the U.S. — the six SBC seminaries, their colleges, Baptist universities, and what a Russian- or Ukrainian-speaking student needs to know.
If God is calling you to plant or pastor, sound theological training matters. Conferences and books help, but they are no substitute for the sustained, guided study a seminary provides — Bible, theology, church history, preaching, and supervised ministry. This page maps your two main formal options: the six Southern Baptist seminaries (and the undergraduate colleges attached to them), and the wider world of Baptist and Christian universities. Russian- and Ukrainian-language programs and free self-learning resources are covered in Parts 2 and 3 of this category.
The single biggest thing to know: the SBC discount
Because Southern Baptists fund the seminaries together through the Cooperative Program, students who are members of a cooperating SBC church pay roughly half — about a 50% tuition discount — at all six SBC seminaries and their undergraduate colleges. (Exact rates vary by school and program; for example, New Orleans recently charged SBC students about $355 per credit hour on campus.) This same discount does not automatically apply at the Baptist universities further down this page. The practical takeaway: being a member of an SBC church is what unlocks the affordability — one more reason to connect with a local SBC congregation early.
The six Southern Baptist seminaries
These six are owned by the SBC and supported by the Cooperative Program. All are accredited by the Association of Theological Schools (ATS), and several also hold regional accreditation. Each offers degrees from certificate and bachelor’s through master’s and doctoral levels, and all offer online and distance options alongside campus study.

Two more training paths worth knowing
Seminary Extension — training where you already live
Begun in 1951 and run jointly by the six seminaries, Seminary Extension brings affordable, non-degree theological courses to hundreds of teaching centers around the country. It exists precisely for bivocational pastors, small-church leaders, and lay volunteers who can’t relocate — a low-barrier on-ramp into solid training while you keep working and ministering.
Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary (Memphis)
A seventh seminary, Mid-America, is thoroughly Southern Baptist in conviction but is not owned by the SBC and receives no Cooperative Program money — so the 50% SBC discount does not apply there. It’s a solid, SBC-friendly option, just structured differently; weigh its costs on their own terms.
Baptist & Christian universities
Beyond the seminaries, many Baptist-affiliated universities offer undergraduate and graduate ministry, Bible, and theology degrees — useful if you want a broader university setting, a bachelor’s degree, or programs your family members might use too. One honest distinction to keep straight: these schools are typically tied to a state Baptist convention and funded by tuition and that convention — they are Baptist, but they do not carry the national SBC seminary tuition discount. Many do offer their own church-related or need-based scholarships, so always ask their admissions office directly.
Florida options, close to home
What Russian- & Ukrainian-speaking students should know
A few practical realities matter especially for our community. None of them is a wall — but knowing them up front saves time and money.
Residency & visa status
If you are a U.S. citizen, green-card holder, refugee, or asylee, you apply as a domestic student — no student visa is involved. If you would be coming from abroad, note that only a seminary’s main campus (not its extension centers) can issue the F-1 paperwork, and a tourist (B-1/B-2) visa cannot be used to enroll. Many in our community are already residents, so this is often a non-issue — but confirm your own situation with the school.
English proficiency
Non-native English speakers are usually required to submit a TOEFL (iBT) or IELTS score — unless you already hold an accredited bachelor’s degree earned in English. If your English isn’t test-ready yet, look at ESL / English Language Programs (South Florida Bible College, for instance, runs one) as a bridge before degree study.
Flexible, affordable entry points
You do not have to move your family or start with a full degree. Consider: online degrees at all six seminaries; certificates, diplomas, and associate degrees as on-ramps (Leavell College even admits students who don’t yet have a high-school diploma or GED); modular and once-a-month extension formats built for working pastors; and bivocational scholarships — New Orleans’ Caskey Center, for example, offers full-tuition help to bivocational and small-church ministers in selected states. Combined with the 50% SBC discount and need-based aid, ministry training is more reachable than most assume.
A note on your foreign degree and language
If you earned a degree in Ukraine, Russia, or elsewhere, U.S. schools can often count it — but you may need a foreign-credential evaluation so they can read your transcript. Ask admissions which evaluator they accept. And while Russian-language seminary programs in the U.S. are rare (that’s the focus of Part 2 of this category), the SBC already trains in many heart languages — Spanish-language tracks exist at several seminaries — so English-medium study with strong online flexibility is the main path open to you today.
Confirm before you commit
Tuition rates, the exact SBC discount, accreditation, visa eligibility, online availability, and credit-transfer rules all change and vary by school and program. Treat this page as a map, not a contract — verify every figure directly with each school’s admissions office before you apply or enroll. Remember too that the seminary discount requires membership in a cooperating SBC church.
What this means for you
For most Russian- and Ukrainian-speaking believers sensing a call, the most reachable path is this: connect with a cooperating SBC church (which unlocks the ~50% discount), start online or with a certificate so you can study while you live and minister, and build toward a degree as your English, finances, and calling allow. The seminaries are designed to send you out trained and (as the SBC puts it) not buried in debt.
You don’t have to choose between supporting your family and being trained for ministry — online study, certificates, the SBC discount, and bivocational scholarships exist precisely so you can do both.
